Essential Off-Road Upgrades: Top 10 Must-Have Jeep Mods"

|

Owning a Jeep is about freedom and adventure. It's about taking off down a dirt road or climbing rocks that have no business being crawled. But as purpose-built as the Wrangler is for all your off-road needs, there are a few tweaks that most Jeep owners would agree are essential before you can really get out there and enjoy your Jeep. Plus, let’s face it, most of these are just a lot of fun.

That being said, with all the options out there, it can be easy to spend a lot of money on things that you don’t need or use, so we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 Jeep mods in 2023 that you need and why.

1. High-Performance Tires

When it comes to choosing the tires for your Jeep, there are a few factors you’ll want to consider. Chances are you’re going to be looking for something that will give you great long-term performance, in which case both durability and firmness are essential, which comes down in many cases to the quality of the tire.

The other thing to keep in mind when buying tires is choosing a tire type and size that is designed for wherever you plan on taking your Jeep. Having the proper tire type can be the difference between an adventure and a nightmare.

While I’m sure many of you out there could write an entire blog post about tires alone, here’s a quick overview of some of the most popular categories to help get you started:

Mud-Terrain Tires: Ideal for anyone who wants to venture off-road. These tires feature larger channel gaps, allowing mud and debris to escape the treads and making sure you maintain traction. They also have protection against chips and punctures and tend to excel on trails, but they are not the best choice for highway driving.

All-Terrain Tires: These are generally considered to be the best option for daily drivers who don't need to add special performance features on a regular basis. These tires provide on-road comfort without making too much noise, which is what you want if most of your driving is done on the highway.

Rock Crawler Tires: While you could easily stick to mud-terrain tires for rock crawling, you can also choose alternatives such as what are known as  “pizza cutter tires.”  While a little less popular in the Jeep community, these tires are a tall and skinny option that is good for agility. Wider options can provide you with better sidewall traction.

Snow Tires: As their name indicates, they are the go-to option for snow, but some can work off-road and on-road during winter. Using these tires only in winter is essential because they are designed to perform in temperatures of 45°F and below – a higher temperature will decrease their functionality.

2. Aftermarket Suspension Systems

Often viewed as an accessory item, Jeep owners know that aftermarket suspension systems are an essential part of any off-road vehicle, acting as a much-needed shock absorber and body roll mechanism. They’ll also give you other performance benefits such as:

Improved Off-Road Performance: By increasing the ground clearance and providing better shock absorption, aftermarket suspension systems significantly improve the off-road performance of a Jeep, or any car for that matter.

An aftermarket suspension system can improve your Jeep's off-road capabilities by increasing ground clearance, improving articulation, and providing better shock absorption.

Better On-Road Handling: By maximizing the friction between your vehicle's tires and the road, an aftermarket suspension system can bring better stability and handling, making your Jeep safer and more enjoyable to drive.

Increased Payload Capacity: Upgrading your suspension system can increase your Jeep's payload capacity, allowing you to carry more weight without compromising performance or safety.

3. Cold-Air Intakes

Cold-air intakes can help increase airflow to your engine, giving you much-needed improved performance and fuel efficiency. They can also help reduce engine heat, which can extend the life of your engine. Installing a cold-air intake is a relatively easy mod that can make a big difference in your Jeep's performance. Other benefits include:

Increased Horsepower: Installing a cold-air intake can noticeably impact horsepower gains. While the exact increase may vary depending on the Jeep model and other modifications, it is not uncommon to experience an improvement of 5 to 20 horsepower. Improving airflow and oxygen supply allows the engine to operate more efficiently and generate more power.

Improved Fuel Economy: A colder and denser air charge can significantly reduce the fuel needed to maintain the optimal air-fuel ratio, resulting in less fuel consumption and lower emissions. Given that off-road adventures are usually in places where gas stations aren't in ample supply, a fuel-efficient car can make all the difference.

4. Off-Road Bumpers

Let’s face it, debris and rocks are virtually unavoidable when going off-road. Having adequate protection against these are necessary for a few reasons:

Protection: Off-road bumpers are designed to protect your Jeep Wrangler's front and rear ends from rocks, debris, and other obstacles encountered while going off-road. Without this protection, rocks, tree stumps, and other hazards on the trail can cause irreversible damage to your Jeep's body kit, costing you thousands.

Enhanced Functionality: Off-road bumpers often come equipped with additional features, such as winch mounts, D-ring shackles, and mounting points for auxiliary lighting. These features can increase the function of your vehicle by making it easier to navigate terrain that might otherwise be impossible or unsafe.

Customization: Off-road bumpers can be customized like other aftermarket parts to meet your needs and preferences. Numerous styles and designs are available, so choose a bumper that best suits your style.

5. Lift Kits

Like we said earlier, one of the reasons we love the Wrangler is the number of options for over-the-top modifications.  And you can’t get more over the top than with a great lift kit. Lifting your Jeep takes the off-road capabilities of the Wrangler from good to great, and if you plan on spending any time off-road, you’ll want to consider lifting your Jeep.

If you don’t know what we’re talking about here, “lifting” your Jeep essentially creates more space between the body and the frame of your Jeep.

Given how popular lift kits are, there are tons of great options out there. If you’re looking for a detailed comparison of several different brands that may help you make your decision, check out this awesome video from TrailRecon on Youtube.

6. High-Performance Brake Pads

Sometimes being able to stop is more important than accelerating, especially in the outdoors, where animals can cross your path suddenly. Having HPBPs gives you more control over your vehicle in these situations.

Improved Braking: When driving off-road, you need brakes that can handle the challenge of tough climbs and rugged terrains. HPBPs provide better braking power when you need it, giving you more control over your vehicle and allowing you to enjoy the allures of the outdoors.

Durability: Off-roading can be tough on your breaks, with rocks, mud, and debris constantly diminishing the impact your brakes have over your vehicle. HPBPs are designed to be more durable and long-lasting than factory brakes.

Consistent Performance: Factory brakes can fade or lose effectiveness over time, especially when driving in extreme conditions. HPBPs are designed to maintain consistent performance, even in the toughest conditions.

7. High-Flow Fuel Injectors

Fuel in vehicles can be a highly volatile topic. The debate about how best to use fuel is crucial since the more fuel efficient a car is, the less taxing it is on the pockets of its owner. Since owning a Jeep can get expensive quickly, we’re all for mods that actually save you money. Here's why:

Increased Power: HFFIs can help increase your Jeep Wrangler's power output by increasing the fuel available to the engine. This raises an engine's combustion efficiency, improving acceleration and overall performance.

8. Off-Road Winches

Winches are often undervalued when it comes to improving the performance of off-road vehicles. Some of the reasons you’ll want to invest in a good winch include:

Recovery: Off-road winches are primarily used for vehicle revolvers when your Jeep is stuck in the mud, sand, or other difficult-to-maneuver terrains. A winch can help to pull your Jeep out of a tough spot and get you back on the trail.

Safety: Off-road winches can be a safety feature when driving on challenging terrain. By having a winch, you can avoid relying on other vehicles or people for emergency recovery, which could be dangerous when stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Versatility: Off-road winches are versatile and can be used for various tasks beyond vehicle recovery. They can move obstacles out of your way, pull trees for firewood, or even be used in making shelter and other outdoor essentials.

9. Upgraded Exhaust

It's not all about the sound; an upgraded exhaust system has many benefits that often get swept under the rug. Some of those benefits are:

Increased Performance: Upgrading your exhaust can improve the overall performance of the Jeep Wrangler by increasing horsepower and torque. It can also improve the throttle response and overall engine efficiency, resulting in a more responsive and powerful driving experience.

Improved Fuel Economy: In some instances, an upgraded exhaust system can improve performance by reducing engine back pressure and allowing for better airflow. This means that your Jeep Wrangler can go further on a gas tank, saving you money in the long run.

10. Windshield Protection Film

If you’ve been a Jeep lover for a long time, you’re well aware of one of the number one complaints we all have – windshield damage. The flat, vertical glass on the Wrangler & Gladiator models is part of the signature look but leads to frequent windshield replacements for most owners. Adding windshield protection like ExoShield ULTRA, especially when you first get your Jeep, is the best way to protect your windshield from breaking as frequently.

Protection Against Chips and Cracks: When driving off-road, your Jeep is exposed to rocks, gravel, and other outdoor elements that could chip or crack your windshield. ExoShield Ultra Windshield Protection is a transparent, protective film applied to the windshield, providing an additional layer of protection against these hazards, saving you constant windshield repairs or replacements in the long run.

Maintain Clarity: Even if your windshield doesn’t break, exposure to small rocks, dirt, and sand lead to the windshield getting pitting and micro-scratches, which over time, will start to make the glass lose optical clarity. A windshield protection film can act as a sacrificial barrier, in this case, to keep your windshield looking like new since the film will take the bulk of the beating on the road.

There are even DIY kits available for Jeeps these days that make protecting your windshield easy and cost-effective.

All of the mods we discussed can improve your Jeep Wrangler's performance, handling, and off-road capabilities, as well as enhance its appearance and functionality. More importantly, you should be able to do most of these in your garage at home if you’ve got the right tools and a knack for reading instructions.
